Barnard's Galaxy |
|
About This Photograph
Barnard's Galaxy, also known as NGC 6822, is a bit of a celestial oddball. It is an irregular galaxy about 1.6 million light years away in the constellation of Sagittarius. While it is small as galaxies go – only 7,000 light years across as compared to the Milky Way's 150,000 – and while it lacks the graceful arms of many "grand design" spiral galaxies, it is nevertheless sprinkled with many star-forming regions.
