About This Photograph
Also known as the Southern Pinwheel Galaxy, M83 is about 15 million light years from Earth in the southern constellation of Hydra. It is currently undergoing a prodigious rate of star formation, as evidenced by the copious numbers of young, blue stars and reddish star-formation regions tracing its spiral arms.
